Can't boot from Micro SD card

Post by 240volts » Thu Nov 01, 2018 11:49 am

I have downloaded the Raspbian image from the software page of the new web site (2018-10-06) and flashed using Etcher to 2 different SD cards. Same issue as before. Hangs showing the 4k open logo. Still booting OK from USB stick.

Hi 240volts,

Do you have access to a 3.3v TTL serial adapter?
Have you tried using a USB Memory stick instead of MicroSD card?

Always use a USB stick as booting from MicroSD card never worked. Trying latest Raspian version from your new web site expecting it to be fixed? Will set up serial connection as before to look at messages but expecting no change?

Ah, apologies... I missed your comment:
Still booting OK from USB stick.
Do you have both a USB Stick and a MicroSD card connected during boot?
If you connect the USB Stick to a USB 2.0 port instead of USB 3.0, does that resolve the problem?

Using a serial connection will allow us to better understand what is going on, as U-Boot will output to this port.
If you're still having issues, please could you include the output during boot in your next message?

Attie, can't find my USB->Serial cable. Blast. Probably left in the office. To be totally clear this is what I have tried:
1) USB stick in USB 3 port no SD card. Boots from stick. No problem.
2) USB stick in USB 2 port no SD card. Reports USB disc or SD card not detected.
3) No USB stick or SD card. Reports USB disc or SD card not detected.
4) SD card only. Hangs at 4kopen logo.
5) SD card and USB stick in USB 3 port. Hangs at 4kopen logo.

Option 3 silly and option 5 pointless but tested as this may help.
Option 1 is the only one that works for me.
Doesn't detect stick if in USB 2 port.
Detects SD card if fitted and boot order is SD card first but hangs at 4kopen logo.

We think your u-boot needs to be updated, the instructions for this are on https://www.4kopen.com/wiki/advanced-tips/update-u-boot however we are just updating the instructions with a simpler method via USB stick.
